It's Summertime Here And Then It's Not

everyday is your birthday
and then it's not
try really hard
and see what you get,
dolled up and waiting inside a shed
or suddenly mistaken for someone else
in the middle of something else
a vacation you went on in 1982 that swimming pool
that cornfield
summer gets you going but slows you down too
and the grass mowed half-assed
whenever you feel like this you realize it's time to go
whenever you need to know something about yourself you go for a long walk
and listen to yourself count the same number over and over
which isn't really counting
it's just repeating the same number
until
you smell that smell of dryer-sheets floating on the wind
afraid you might trip
on a crooked piece of sidewalk
it's summertime here
and then it's not
